Day 3 – AdelaideFlinders Ranges (L)

The Flinders Ranges provide the ultimate Australian Experience. From rugged ridges and ancient gorges lined with massive gum trees, through to the unending expanse of the Australian Outback and an abundance of Australian wildlife, you have everything here that defines Australia.

Your adventure takes you north into the wine regions of the Clare Valley. On your way, you will travel through old towns with quaint cottages and historic buildings. At Clare, you have an opportunity to visit one of the boutique wineries in this region. The legendary lilac haze of the Flinders Ranges looms ever closer and you are now in the habitat of Australia’s famous wildlife – not only kangaroos and emus live here in abundance, but also many species of birds and reptiles. You into the heart of the Flinders Ranges through vast sheep station country. There will be an opportunity for a poignant stop at one of the ghost towns for some stories and photos. Wilpena Pound Resort is your destination tonight, where you will find glorious walking trails and excellent accommodation. Optional scenic flights are available (own cost).

Overnight: Wilpena Pound Resort or Rawnsley Park Luxury Eco Villas

Day 4 – Flinders Ranges (B.L.)

We drive through the heart of the Flinders Ranges, into tree-lined Bunyeroo Gorge then onto Brachina Gorge where you may spot the rare and beautiful Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and see fossils more than 600-million-years-old. We reach the western edge of the Flinders Ranges, overlooking the plains country towards Lake Torrens and head for lunch at the Prairie Hotel. This historic Outback pub, situated along the original Old Ghan Railway Line, has an international reputation for its cuisine, in particular, its feral food menu (other meals available). Your destination today is the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary at the northernmost end of these ranges. This is some of the oldest landscapes on Earth. Arkaroola is renowned for its 4WD tracks, some of which you will explore with your driver/guide. On a clear night, which is most nights, the jewels of the southern sky can be viewed not just with the naked eye, but also through the best privately owned telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere at the Arkaroola Observatory (own cost).

Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Day 5 – Flinders Ranges (B.L.)

Your day starts with the famous Ridgetop Tour, which offers you some of the most breathtaking views of rugged peaks towering above Outback plains imaginable. Cool creeks and mysterious waterholes sparkling within jagged gorges. After a delightful lunch you will travel south through sheep and cattle stations that are in excess of 1000 square miles into the Mt Chambers and Mt Frome area, rich in Aboriginal history. Then through more spectacular gorges to the quiet old copper mining settlement of Blinman, the highest town in South Australia and your destination for tonight. Enjoy some Aussie tucker and maybe a cold beer or two in the classic old pub.

Overnight: Blinman Hotel

Day 6 – Flinders RangesAdelaide (B.L.)

We begin your return to ‘civilization’, driving through Moralana Scenic Drive, a tree-lined gorge to the western edge of the Flinders Ranges. Travel through the Pichi Richi Pass, following the historic Old Ghan Railway line, back up into the high country, which provide a splendid panoramic view over the Spencer Gulf. Now, with the waters of the Gulf on one side and the magnificent ranges on the other, you travel back towards Adelaide. The journey past historic ports provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this trade route in by-gone days into the rich pastoral land. The richness of these surrounds is in stark contrast to the arid lands you have just been into. Your adventure will have taken you through the extremes of the Australian Outback.
