Malawi

Malawi is a small sliver of a country dominated by the most appealing of Africa's great lakes. Lake Malawi, the ‘lake of stars', is three quarters of the length of the country. Malawi's claim to be the ‘Warm Heart of Africa' is not just glib marketing-speak. Although not as rich in game as other African countries, its magic lies in its marvellously friendly and laid-back people, its stunning scenery and its superb flora and birdlife. If you enjoy experiencing authentic African culture and chatting to local people, then a holiday in Malawi is an ideal safe starting point.

When and How to Tour Malawi

Malawi is a year-round destination: January to March is warm but wet, excellent for flowers; April to December is warm, clear and dry, with some rain in April and November. You can use a variety of transport to get around - private transfers, 4x4 self-drive, charter flights and scheduled Air Malawi flights.

  • Safaris
Malawi is not a ‘big five' safari destination. However it offers some varied and interesting game viewing and the chance to see animals without feeling crowded by other visitors.

Most Malawi safaris head to Liwonde , its leading National Park, characterized by the crocodile and hippo-filled waters of the Shire River. Some of Africa's finest elephant sightings are enjoyed by those who get to experience the boat safaris on the Shire from Mvuu Wilderness Lodge or Mvuu Camp. An estimated 900 elephants, some 4000 hippos, 600 sable antelope and recently introduced breeding groups of zebra, hartebeest and rhino are resident in the park. Game drives and bush walks are also offered here.

Finally many people combined a safari in Malawi and some time at Lake Malawi with a more classical big game safari in the South Luangwa National Park of Zambia which is an easy flight from Lilongwe.
